In the 2025 ranking, Marqués de Riscal ranked 27th.
In the global wine industry, recognition from the prestigious Drinks International magazine is undoubtedly a prestigious honor. Now, let's delve into the world of Marqués de Riscal, the "World's Best Vineyard 2024," and explore its extraordinary charm and secrets.
A Spirit of Innovation within Heritage
—Risk All
Founded in 1858, Marqués de Riscal is one of the earliest wineries in D.O. Ca. Rioja.
In 1862, founder Guillermo Hurtado de Amézaga pioneered the use of a French winemaker to introduce Bordeaux winemaking techniques to D.O. Ca. Rioja.
This decision not only elevated the quality of the wines but also led to the creation of Rioja's first standard bottled wine.
Throughout its history, Marqués de Riscal has consistently upheld a spirit of innovation and progress, setting a benchmark in a constantly evolving winemaking landscape. We strive to create wines that are authentic, fresh, elegant, and accessible.
Since our founding, export has been our mission. Today, over 60% of Marqués de Riscal's production is sold in over 120 countries and regions worldwide.
Exceptional Terroir and Regenerative Agriculture in the Vineyards
—Sustainability Development
Marqués de Riscal boasts a unique geographical location, with its primary vineyards located in the Spanish D.O. Ca. Rioja. The winery's vineyards cover 1,500 hectares across seven major Chilean appellations, scattered between Elciego and neighboring villages such as Leza, Laguardia, and Villabuena.
The poor soils, originating from the various terraces of the Ebro River, are chalky clay. The Rioja Alavesa sub-appellation has traditionally been renowned for producing wines with excellent aging potential, thanks to the grape juice's high acidity and well-structured tannins.
In the face of climate change, the winery has placed sustainability at the core of its long-term strategy.
The winery has been practicing organic farming for many years, and currently over 80% of its vineyards are organic, with the goal of achieving 100% organic certification in the coming years. The winery also minimizes its environmental impact by reducing fungicide use, optimizing water management, and promoting regenerative agricultural techniques. Only by protecting ecosystems can we ensure wine quality and sustainable development.
A century-old winery creates a golden ode to fine wines
—Admired Wine
Marqués de Riscal offers a diverse portfolio of wines across several lines. The Marqués de Riscal Reserva red wine is the winery's flagship. With a deep ruby red color, it exudes delicate aromas of cherry, raspberry, spice, and tobacco, offering a complex, smooth palate with a lingering finish. Marqués de Riscal red wines primarily draw on the rich fruit of Tempranillo, resulting in a powerful, long-lasting, and supple mouthfeel with velvety tannins.
White wines, made from Rueda Verdejo or Sauvignon Blanc, are richly flavored and refreshing.
Once again being named to the 2025 Drinks International list not only demonstrates Marqués de Riscal's RISK ALL spirit but also serves as an inspiration and motivation for its future journey. Looking ahead, Marqués de Riscal will remain steadfast in its core values of innovation, quality, and sustainability, continuing its exploration and pursuit of excellence, striving to present more extraordinary creations to wine lovers around the world and continue its legendary legacy in the international wine world.
