Meaning of Mjolnir. It is the symbol of the Norse thunder god Thor, and is the name of his hammer. Mjolnir literally means "Crusher" in Old Norse. Thor was the god most often called upon for protection by the Norse people. In modern day, the Thor's hammer symbol is frequently used to represent and celebrate Norse heritage, particularly Viking heritage. It also stands as a symbol of defiance against Christian influence over Norse/Germanic culture. Unfortunately, the Thor's hammer symbol has been co-opted by many white supremacist/nationalist groups including the Aryan brotherhood gang, and is hence looked upon by many as a racist symbol, even though the symbol is not inherently racist itself. I have heard that if a person goes to prison with this tattoo on their body, and they are not a member of an Aryan gang, Aryan gang members will remove the tattoo by any means at their disposal.
